Excellent second by Cascadian in G1 Prix Jean Prat

Cascadian just failed by a short-neck to land the G1 Prix Jean Prat on his first run in a Pattern race at Deauville, France, on Sunday, 8 July.

It was a tremendous performance by the three-year-old New Approach colt, trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, who had run just four times previously.

Settled at the rear of the main group of six who raced towards the stands’ side over Deauville’s straight mile, Cascadian was switched left with more than two furlongs remaining to be nearest the stands’ rail.

He improved to fourth with a furlong remaining and ran on strongly but could not quite reach winner Intellogent, who triumphed in 1m 35.83s on ground described as good.

The third, Gustav Klimt, finished a length behind Cascadian. The Godolphin runner came into the race after succeeding three times and impressed when returning to action this year at Maisons-Laffitte on 16 June, when he quickened strongly for an easy victory in a mile conditions race.

He also took a seven-furlong Maisons-Laffitte contest in October and gained a comprehensive success on his debut over the same distance at Chantilly in July, 2017.

Cascadian’s only previous defeat came in the seven-furlong Listed Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville in August, in which he ran well to finish second behind subsequent G2 Champagne Stakes third Mythical Magic.

Lisa-Jane Graffard of Godolphin commented: “Cascadian put up a superb performance against top-class opposition and we could not be more delighted with the run.

“He is a horse that Andre Fabre has always liked very much. He made an excellent comeback at Maisons-Laffitte last month and had done very well since then.”

“We will see how he comes out this race and then look at all the options.”
