Wise Approach emerged with plenty of credit on his first G1 appearance as he finished a close third behind Venetian Sun and Gstaad in the Prix Morny on Sunday, 24 August.

The Charlie Appleby-trained juvenile, bidding to emulate his half-brother Perfect Power’s victory in the Deauville highlight in 2021, broke on terms and was steadied at the rear of the six runners as US raider Outfielder made the early running.

Having taken closer order approaching the final quarter-mile, Wise Approach showed good acceleration to hold every chance alongside Venetian Sun, Gstaad and Coppull with a furlong and a half to race.

Wise Approach established a slender advantage a furlong out and responded gamely for William Buick when Venetian Sun challenged for the lead soon after.

Venetian Sun went on in the closing strides, with Gstaad rallying to get to within a short-neck of the winner at the line. Wise Approach kept on in third, a further half-length in arrears, as the first three home pulled two lengths clear of Outfielder.

Charlie Appleby said: “It was a very pleasing run from Wise Approach, who has finished bang there behind the two best juveniles over this trip. His preference is for quick ground and I’m sure he would go to the Middle Park Stakes if conditions were suitable. If not, we might contemplate the Breeders’ Cup.”
