The G1 Investec Derby is as open as any I can remember in recent years.

The G1 Investec Derby is as open as any I can remember in recent years.

Inevitably, this is likely to lead to a record number of supplementary entries, which in turn will lead to a huge prize money pot for the Classic on June 4.

York's G2 Dante Stakes blew a massive hole in the predictions of many. Midterm refused to relax and pulled his way out of contention. He falls short of the standard and needs to mature.

The Dante winner Wings Of Desire was having only his third start -- he had had his first race only last month.

Trainer John Gosden described the win as "very special." He added: "The great thing is there is so much improvement in him."

Home-bred Wings Of Desire is a brother to Eagle Top, a Royal Ascot winner who was also 2nd in the G1 King George. He is another who would need to be supplemented if he is to run at Epsom.

Deauville finished a solid second, with Foundation third. But, immediately, there was reflection and re-analysis of other so-called Derby Trials.

US Army Ranger, the narrow Chester Vase winner, is back at the head of the pecking order, followed by Wings Of Desire.

And still there is speculation on the Ballydoyle filly Minding taking on the colts in the Derby, though the commercial value of such a move is questionable.

Godolphin, who have enjoyed a highly successful York May Meeting, seem more likely than ever to have multiple entries for the Derby.

Cloth Of Stars and Linguistic are still in the mix --but they need to be supplemented -- along with Moonlight Magic, winner of the G3 Derrinstown Derby Trial.
