Beldame third for Penwith

Penwith ran well to finish third in the G1 Beldame Stakes over nine furlongs on muddy dirt at Belmont Park, USA, on Saturday, October 1.

The five-year-old Bernardini mare, ridden by Javier Castellano, was settled a close fourth towards the outside and remained in the position until entering the final bend when she moved up to third.

Penwith continued to progress on the outside and had every chance turning wide into the straight only for Forever Unbridled to come through and score by two and a quarter lengths from Tiger Ride, with another two and three quarter lengths back to Penwith.

The Godolphin runner kept on to be a definite third, while the winner stopped the clock at 1m 50.24s.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said: "Penwith has run very well again - we are happy with that performance.

"She has been a real consistent and nice mare all her career, winning a G2 and being G1 placed twice.

"She might have one more run; otherwise she will be retired from racing."
