Winning form backs step up in grade for Savatiano

Mike Hedge

Progressive filly Savatiano will be out to stretch her unbeaten sequence of this preparation when she runs in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes at Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Successive wins in restricted company under big weights in Sydney at her past two starts, the latest by five lengths at Randwick last month, have left trainer James Cummings in little doubt as to Savatiano’s readiness for Stakes company.

“She’s in terrific form coming into this with two wins from two starts and she’s gone ahead again since the win at Randwick,” Cummings said.

“She looks beautifully placed for her first attempt at Stakes level and if she can win here it will give us an idea about where to go with her in the future.”

Savatiano is also entered for the G2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Doomben on Saturday with a decision to come on where she will run.

Savatiano will be accompanied by stablemate Beau Geste who hasn’t been far away in G3 three-year-old races at his past two.

“He’s had a freshen up for this and is dropping back to 1,200m after finishing third in the Hawkesbury Guineas in April,” Cummings said.

“We gave him a barrier trial over 800m a couple of weeks ago just to keep him ticking over and to get some speed back into his legs.

“If he’s sharpened up the way we anticipate than he can be extremely competitive.”
