Oceanographer sets sail for Geelong

Promising Godolphin stayer Oceanographer is set to join stablemate Qewy in the line-up for Wednesday's G3 Geelong Cup, over 2,400 metres, at the popular seaside track situated on Port Phillip Bay, 45 miles south-west of Melbourne.

The son of Sea The Stars will be launching an all-out attempt to win his way into the field for the G1 Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Nov 1.

Like Qewy, Oceanographer has been weighted on the minimum, 50kg (7st 12lb), for the Melbourne Cup, and will need to win at Geelong -- and win impressively -- if he is going to earn a penalty to get him into Australia's iconic two-mile handicap.

"We were originally going to run Second Wave at Geelong, but we just feel he will do better for a few extra days before having his first run here (in Saturday's G2 Moonee Valley Cup)," explained the gelding's trainer Charlie Appleby.

"Oceanographer has settled in particularly well, and is working along nicely. He is the logical choice as replacement," he added.

Oceanographer will be having only the 10th start of his brief racing career. His four wins, all on British tracks, have come in the 2,000m to 2,200m distance range.

Qewy, a son of Street Cry, has won three of his 22 starts. A hugely versatile racehorse, he has also run with credit in hurdles and steeplechases.

"We are hoping that Qewy can finish in the first three, which will enable him to qualify for the Cup, though he, too, is a long way down in the weights," Appleby added.
