Free-running Distant Storm third in G3 Acomb Stakes

Distant Storm’s refusal to settle early on compromised his chances as he finished third in the G3 Acomb Stakes at York, UK, on Wednesday, 20 August.
The Night Of Thunder colt, who had gamely won a Newmarket maiden on his only previous start for Charlie Appleby, was lit up leaving the stalls and pulled hard in third behind May Angel and Gewan.
Distant Storm settled better after the first quarter-mile and took closer order down the inside rail to press the leading duo over two furlongs from home.
Gewan went on approaching the final furlong, with Italy launching a strong challenge from the rear to take second soon after.
Distant Storm could not go on with the front two and kept on at the same pace under William Buick to go down by just under five lengths in total behind Gewan, who is also by Night Of Thunder.
Charlie Appleby said: “Ruling Court finished third in this race 12 months ago and Distant Storm’s performance was very similar. He will improve a lot for today’s run and will have gained some valuable experience. We will consider whether we give him one more run or put him away for the year.”
