Modern News caught close home in G3 Sovereign Stakes

Racenews

Modern News filled the runner-up spot in a G3 race for a second time this season as he was collared in the dying strides by Tempus in the Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury, UK, on Thursday, 11 August.

The half-brother to Classic winner Modern Games, who had finished a length second in the G3 Diomed Stakes on Derby Day at Epsom Downs, broke smartly and soon established a three-length lead under William Buick.

Modern News wound up the pace entering the final three furlongs but could not resist the late challenge of Tempus, who hit the front near the finish to score by three-quarters of a length.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: “Modern Games has run another good, solid race. He has been very consistent all year and deserves to hopefully pick up a Group race at some point.”
