Lucullan pleases with G3 second

Racenews

Progressive three-year-old colt Lucullan ran his best race to date when runner-up in the nine-furlong G3 Hill Prince Stakes on turf at Belmont Park, USA on Saturday, October 7.

The son of Hard Spun, successful previously on two of his three starts on grass for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, was well away on the outside and settled in fourth place.

He moved up to third going into the final turn, was fourth into the straight and a close fifth inside the final furlong before running on to gain second close home under Kendrick Carmouche.

Lucullan was beaten a neck in the nine-runner contest by Yoshida, whose time on firm ground came to 1m 47.07s.

Kiaran McLaughlin declared: “Lucullan also ran very well and was finishing strongly.

”He can improve again. He raced a little bit wide, but it was a pleasing performance.

“I am not sure where we will go with him next.”
