La Pelosa goes after Sweet success

Racenews

Royal Ascot runner-up La Pelosa moves back up to G3 level for the Sweet Solera Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket, UK, on Saturday, 11 August.

The Charlie Appleby-trained two-year-old filly, an impressive debut winner at six furlongs on Polytrack at Kempton Park in May, kept on to come home third on her first attempt at seven furlongs in the Listed Star Stakes at Sandown Park on 26 July.

She was badly impeded and knocked out of the race when fifth in the six-furlong G2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket on 13 July and ran an excellent race to go down by a neck to Main Edition in the G3 Albany Stakes over the same trip at Royal Ascot on 22 June.

Brett Doyle comes in for the ride on La Pelosa, who faces, from stall two, six other fillies headed by Main Edition and Star Stakes runner-up Ajrar plus course and distance winners Pennywhistle and California Love.

Charlie Appleby remarked: “La Pelosa has run consistently well so far, with her only disappointment coming in the Duchess Of Cambridge, when she lost all chance after being hampered.

“She will appreciate any rain as we have always felt that she is a filly who wants a bit of cut in the ground.

“She is getting weight from Main Edition, who narrowly beat her at Royal Ascot, while the ground was probably quick enough for her in the Star Stakes.

“If she can find a little more improvement from the ease in the ground, it should make her very competitive.”
