Grecian Light after G3 spoils at the Curragh

Two-year-old filly Grecian Light is out to take advantage of a drop in class and trip in the G3 C L & M F Weld Park Stakes (14.20hrs local time) over seven furlongs at the Curragh, Ireland, on Sunday, September 25.

The Charlie Appleby-trained daughter of Shamardal was headed in the closing stages to finish second, beaten three quarters of a length by Rich Legacy, on her first try at a mile in the G2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, UK, on September 8.

She disappointed in the seven-furlong G3 Prestige Stakes on August 27, when she failed to act on the course at Goodwood, but ran two excellent races over the same trip at Newmarket, winning a maiden and taking second in the G3 Sweet Solera Stakes.

Charlie Appleby commented: "It was pleasing to see Grecian Light return to form in the May Hill Stakes.

"Soft ground is an unknown but she has done well at home and this gives her a chance to win at Group level."

Grecian Light, with William Buick in the saddle for the third consecutive time and drawn nine, faces nine juvenile fillies headed by Eziyra, who was beaten a neck at G3 level on her latest outing, and Galway maiden winner Perle De La Mer.

Also on Sunday’s card at the Curragh, G3 Irish St Leger Trial runner-up Twilight Payment (Jim Bolger/Kevin Manning) returns to two miles for the 10-runner Listed Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital Loughbrown Stakes (17.05hrs local time).
