G3 second for Althiqa at Deauville

Racenews

Althiqa continued her progressive profile as she stayed on strongly from the rear to take second in the G3 Prix de Lieurey at Deauville, France, on Saturday, 15 August.

The Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old, stepping up to a mile for the first time after coming home third in the seven-furlong G3 Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood, UK, at the end of July, was anchored in last of the 10 runners by Mickael Barzalona for much of the race.

She quickened well after being switched down the stands rail a furlong and a half out, getting up for second near the line to finish a length and a quarter behind Hunter’s Light filly Irska.

Charlie Appleby said: “We were very pleased with the performance of Althiqa, who has improved with every run this season. She stayed the mile well today, which opens up a few options, and hopefully we can win a nice Group race with her at some point.”
