City Of York second for Toscanini

Racenews
Toscanini ran a fine race when a fast-finishing second in the G3 City Of York Stakes over seven furlongs at York on Friday, August 25.

The five-year-old son of Shamardal, who has acted as a pacemaker to stablemate Ribchester in G1 mile contests this season, broke well under Paul Hanagan. He was settled behind the leaders and asked to deliver a challenge two furlongs from home. He was not able to quicken immediately before staying on strongly in the final half-furlong. He just failed to overhaul Talaayeb, going down by a neck. The winning time was 1m 24.08s on ground described as good.

Trainer Richard Fahey said: “I was delighted with Toscanini today. He has run a good, solid race and in another few strides might have got there.

“It was nice for him to have a day in the sun. It was a very competitive race for a G3 contest and you would have to be happy with the run. Obviously, we would have liked to have won but it was still a cracking effort. He was in front three yards past the line so I told him he won!”
