Bronze for Silver Knott in G2 Pennine Ridge Stakes

Racenews

Silver Knott stayed on to finish third on his first US appearance since last season’s Breeders’ Cup in the G2 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday, 3 June.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt narrowly failed to overcome a slow start when going down by a nose in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and was once again sluggish from the stalls, settling in fifth on the inner rail after being rousted.

Congruent shuffled Silver Knott back to sixth entering the back straight but the Godolphin runner was still within striking distance after being angled out by Richard Mullen at the top of the lane.

Silver Knott challenged for second inside the final furlong and only missed out on the runner-up spot by a head as Far Bridge unleashed a late run down the rail. Kalik made all the running to score by a length, with the front three pulling two lengths clear of fourth home Lachaise.

Charlie Appleby said: “It looks as though stepping up to a mile and a quarter is going to suit Silver Knott, so we will keep an eye on the G1 Belmont Derby in early July. He receives an invitation for that race after being placed here.”
