Botanik not for passing in G3 Prix de Reux

Racenews

Botanik recorded a first G3 victory as he bravely made all in the Prix de Reux at Deauville, France, on Sunday, 7 August.

The son of Golden Horn, runner-up on his only previous Group-race appearance in the 2020 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, broke smartly and was sent on into a length and a half lead by Mickael Barzalona.

Botanik’s advantage was reduced slightly turning in but the Godolphin homebred found plenty as Mr de Pourceaugnac, Glycon, Skazino and Iresine all attempted to press for the lead in the straight.

The Andre Fabre-trained four-year-old continued to rally in front, passing the post three-quarters of a length ahead of Glycon in the extended 12-furlong contest.

Mickael Barzalona said: “Botanik likes this style of races and good ground. He has some class and he proved it today He has a great mentality and likes to go at his own pace. He doesn’t need to be in front but, if there is no pace, he can make it, which is a good attribute.

“I hope there is more to come. I don’t know what the next step will be, but the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville could be a target.”
