With The Moonlight second on stateside debut in G1 Belmont Oaks

Racenews

With The Moonlight bounced back with a game second in the G1 Belmont Oaks Invitational at Belmont Park, USA, on Saturday, 9 July.

The Charlie Appleby-trained filly, an impressive winner of a Newmarket Listed race in May, was reverting to 10 furlongs after coming home last in the G1 Oaks at Epsom Downs in early June.

Ridden for the first time by Frankie Dettori, With The Moonlight raced in second of the 10 runners before making her move rounding the home bend.

She headed Cairo Memories a furlong and a half out but had no answer to the swooping challenge of Mckulick, with a length and three quarters separating the duo at the line.

Charlie Appleby said: “I was pleased with With The Moonlight. She had a good run around there and was just beaten by a better filly on the day.

“We will contemplate whether or not we leave her out there and hopefully she will get an invitation for the Saratoga Oaks.”
