With The Moonlight runner-up in G2 Lake Placid Stakes

Racenews

With The Moonlight produced another admirable effort on her North American trip as she chased home Haughty in the G2 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday, 20 August.

The Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old, making a quick turnaround after winning the G3 Saratoga Oaks 13 days earlier, stumbled slightly leaving the stalls and raced in fifth of the six runners as Haughty established a clear lead.

With The Moonlight still had four rivals in front of her at the top of the straight before unleashing a powerful turn of foot down the centre of the course entering the final furlong, moving up to second in a matter of strides.

She continued to close under Luis Saez but could not get on terms with Haughty, who made all for a three-quarter length victory in the extended-mile contest.

Charlie Appleby said: “With The Moonlight has run a solid race again but was unfortunately too far back in the field. The winner got a nice, easy lead and we struggled to peg her back. We will probably stick to Plan A and head to Keeneland for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.”
