Siskany has all the answers in G2 Belmont Gold Cup

Racenews

Siskany gained the biggest success of his career on his US debut with a decisive victory in the G2 Belmont Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Friday, 9 June.

The son of Dubawi, who was beaten a neck in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March, broke on terms and raced behind the leaders in fifth down the inside rail.

William Buick switched Siskany out when L’Imperator made a short-lived bid for glory down the back and the Godolphin stayer travelled strongly to press for third turning in.

Amazing Grace quickened up the inside rail to hit the front at the top of the lane but Siskany readily covered the move, with the Charlie Appleby-trained five-year-old collaring the leader a furlong out before forging ahead for a two-length success.

William Buick said: “I was very confident that Siskany had the best credentials today, although it was a hard race to weigh up because there were so many horses in the field with different backgrounds. Everything went how I wanted it to go – Siskany is a stayer with a kick, so I was glad when the pace wasn’t overly fast.

“I pulled him out into the clear and wanted to ride him like the best horse in the race. He has always been a pleasure to ride and has been pitched into some quite competitive races. When you go through his form, he has run in some very good races and has been a good horse for Godolphin, without question.”
