Mystic Guide third in G3 Peter Pan

Racenews

Mystic Guide made good late headway to finish third in the G3 Peter Pan Stakes over nine furlongs on dirt at Saratoga, USA, on Thursday, 16 July.

Making his Graded race debut, the Michael Stidham-trained colt was held up second last of the nine runners by Jose Ortiz.

He still had seven rivals in front of him turning for home and stayed on well after being switched wide in the straight, taking third approaching the final half-furlong to come home three and a half lengths behind the victorious Country Grammer.

Godolphin USA President Jimmy Bell said: “Mystic Guide got shuffled back at the break and it was probably one of the first times that he has really faced kickback all the way round. Jose Ortiz said that he resented it. He fell so far back that he gave himself no chance of winning but did kick on and close when angled out turning for home.

“We have probably learned something about Mystic Guide and kickback, but he ran very nicely in the straight. He was closing but left himself with too much to do.”
