Maternal and Kinshachi return at Randwick

Mike Hedge

The Godolphin fillies Maternal and Kinshachi will be out to underline their importance, both present and future, to the organisation when they run in the G3 The Nivison at Randwick on Saturday, October 21.

With 11 wins between them Maternal (Brenton Avdulla) and Kinshachi (Glyn Schofield) have both proved themselves capable racehorses and they are also rated as two of the most important broodmare prospects in training.

Maternal, a daughter of Street Cry, is out of the four-time G1 winner Divine Madonna, while Kinshachi is by Commands from the good producer Nagoya, who is also the dam of G3 Danehill Stakes winner and G1 Newmarket Handicap placegetter Aichi.

And according to their trainer James Cummings, they are ready to make good starts to their latest campaigns.

“Maternal has similar form lines to Kinshachi who she beat narrowly in the Gai Waterhouse Stakes at Ipswich during the winter,” Cummings said.

“Her two barrier trials have been satisfactory, she’s been a very consistent filly who can figure here in a very good field.”

“Kinshachi showed good form in Queensland during her last prep. She might need a run or two to reach her peak and some rain would be an advantage.”

“But they are both classy fillies who will eventually be important additions to the Godolphin broodmare band.”

Also at Randwick, the promising three-year-old sprinters Malahat (Glyn Schofield) and Piracy (Andrew Adkins) make their Stakes debuts in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes.

Cummings said the race had been a long-term target for both colts.

“Malahat finished fourth to his stablemate Viridine two starts back when he led and there wasn’t a lot between them. We have a very good opinion of Viridine and this colt has trialled nicely since that run.”

“Piracy has worked his way through the grades and shown that he’s improving with every run.”

“He was solid at Randwick last start when he finished fourth and although he goes up in class he can be competitive if he gets some cover.”
