Limelight for Indulgent in Go For Wand

Indulgent gained her third victory at the New York track of Aqueduct in the G3 Go For Wand Handicap over a mile on dirt on Saturday, December 2.

The four-year-old Bernardini filly, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, found the mile fine after two six-furlong victories in November 2016 and January this year and was gaining her biggest success.

Indulgent, ridden again by Luis Saez, broke well from the outside draw and tracked the leader before challenging entering the straight.

The half-sister to Godolphin’s three-time G1 winner Frosted, who is now a Darley stallion, went to the front with over a furlong to race and ran on well to hold off her six opponents. She beat the 2016 Go For Wand winner Highway Star by a length in 1m 37.75s.

Jimmy Bell of Godolphin commented: “Indulgent has a more famous older brother and to have the family continue on with her being a graded stakes winner makes a big difference.

“Everything worked out perfectly in the race, she broke running, sat off the leader and she responded very kindly in the straight.

“She started out sprinting, but Kiaran always had in the back of his mind the thought she might stretch out to a mile.

“The first try over the distance did not go well as she didn’t care for the sloppy surface, but today it has been mission accomplished.

"To get a graded victory under her name is very, very important. It is great for Sheikh Mohammed’s breeding to carry on this great family that's been so good to us with Frosted, Midshipman and some others and she will be a very welcome addition to the breeding operation.”

Luis Saez added: “Last time (in the Pumpkin Pie (6f) at Aqueduct on November 5) the rail was heavy and she broke from the inside and we couldn't get out and that hurt a little bit. 

“Today, she got an outside post and she broke pretty well. We came to the straight, I asked her and she took off.”
