Improvement expected from Spectroscope at Randwick

The former French-trained middle-distance performer Spectroscope has the chance to find his best form as he gets out to a suitable trip in Saturday’s G3 Craven Plate at Randwick.

A winner twice in France where he was also stakes placed, Spectroscope quickly found form in Australia and has won three times for his new stable. 

“It’s clear his best distance is around the 2000m of this race, so I think he’ll improve on his last couple,” said trainer James Cummings.

Spectroscope (Craig Williams) has to deal with the in-form Happy Clapper, the recent G1 Epsom Handicap winner who has performed well behind Winx recently, along with the improving Classic Uniform.

“He ran well last time and he’s trained on nicely. Look for improvement, but he’ll be even better next start,” his trainer said.

Saturday’s stakes-race contingent at Randwick is completed by the filly Regimen (Brenton Avdulla) who has to give weight in the Listed Reginald Allan Quality.

The Sepoy filly has won three of her only four starts, finishing second in the other and comes into this race after defeating older opposition last time out.

“She’s a well-performed filly who’s been coming through the mid-week grades strongly,” Cummings said.

“You have to take notice of her win against older mares at Warwick Farm last start. It can’t be overestimated how hard it is for a three-year-old filly to beat the older ones at this time of year.”
