Heresy, Brigantine confirm Guineas prospects with Caulfield placings

Mike Hedge

Heresy and Brigantine confirmed their status as Guineas contenders with placings in traditional lead-up events at Caulfield on Saturday, 18 September.

For Heresy, next month’s G1 Thousand Guineas became an achievable goal after she was caught in the final strides when second to Bon’s A Pearla in the G2 TG Prelude.

The daughter of Street Boss seemed likely to overcome her wide run when she forged to the front at the 100m, but the effort told as the winner claimed her just short of the line to score by a head.

Brigantine produced as similar effort in the colt’s division, the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, in which he was beaten a half-length by Lightsaber.

With the pace slow, jockey Damien Lane made his move early and after looming at the 200m, he couldn’t quite match Lightsaber’s turn of foot, his performance suggesting the step up to 1,600m in the G1 Caulfield Guineas would suit.

Brigantine is likely to join his James Cummings-trained stablemate Anamoe, Australia’s highest-ranking 3YO, in the Guineas.
