Godolphin duo placed in French G3

Racenews

Walton Street and First Nation, both five-year-olds trained by Charlie Appleby, finished second and third in the G3 Prix de Reux over an extended 12 furlongs at Deauville, France, on Sunday, 4 August.

Walton Street, by Cape Cross and partnered by William Buick, tried to make all and was only headed in the closing stages by Ashrun, going down a short-neck, with the James Doyle-ridden First Nation two lengths back in third of the eight runners.

First Nation, a son of Dubawi, was held up in fifth before coming through on the inner in the straight. He tried to challenge his stable companion at the furlong pole, but could not pull out any more. The winner’s time came to 2m 42.69s on good ground.

Charlie Appleby said: “Both ran well.

“It was a nice run from the front by Walton Street who met one too good, while First Nation came through to have ever chance.

“I think we will be taking them both back to Dubai.”
