G3 third for Secret Number at Newbury

Racenews

Secret Number was denied a clear run when coming home a close third in the G3 Legacy Cup over 11 furlongs at Newbury, UK, on Saturday, September 23.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained seven-year-old, an easy winner of the G2 International Bosphorus Cup at Veliefendi, Turkey, on September 3, tracked the leaders in third of the 11 runners early on before moving up to second with half a mile to race.

He stayed on to lay down a strong challenge approaching the final furlong but had to be snatched up by Gerald Mosse soon after as Second Step drifted across the Godolphin runner.

Secret Number rallied near the line to go down by a length to Desert Encounter, who won in 2m 17.91s on good ground, with Second Step keeping second following a stewards enquiry.

Saeed bin Suroor commented: “Secret Number was a little unlucky today but still ran well.

“We will see how he comes out of the race before deciding where to go next.”
