G3 third for Lake Lucerne in Athenia Stakes

Racenews

Lake Lucerne picked up some useful G3 Black Type as she came home third in the Athenia Stakes over nine furlongs on turf at Belmont Park, USA, on Saturday, 25 September.

The daughter of Dubawi, who is out of the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Round Pond, made the early running before settling in second behind Stand For The Flag after the first quarter-mile.

Lake Lucerne quickened to regain the lead at the top of the straight and kept on for Jose Lezcano after being headed by Pocket Square over a furlong from home.

The Brendan Walsh-trained four-year-old was passed by Miss Teheran inside the final-half furlong, going down by three and a half lengths in total.

Godolphin USA President Jimmy Bell said: “Lake Lucerne ran a very hard race and deserved to get some meaningful Black Type, especially with regard to her breeding. We will see where we go next but it was a very pleasing effort.”
