G1 third for Goldspur in Criterium de Saint-Cloud

Racenews

Goldspur produced a solid performance on his G1 debut as he finished third despite showing signs of inexperience in the 10-furlong Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Saturday, 23 October.

The Dubawi colt, who headed to France on the back of two UK victories including a head success in the G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes, raced freely in a close second on the outside of El Bodegon early on.

Goldspur attempted to close on the leader turning in but could not get on terms and wandered around in the straight before being passed by Stone Age inside the final half-furlong.

The Charlie Appleby-trained juvenile kept on under William Buick to go down by just under three lengths in total behind all-the-way winner El Bodegon.

Charlie Appleby said: “It was a pleasing effort from Goldspur to place at G1 level on only his third start. I think stepping up in trip is going to see further improvement next year.”
