Papineau won two of his three races in France as a three-year-old in 2003 for Andre Fabre, including the Listed Prix de l'Avre over 1m4f at Longchamp, but it was his performances in Cup races at four that prompted his induction into Godolphin's Hall Of Fame; he amassed over £260,000 in prize money from only nine starts and confirmed himself as one of the world's leading stayers when winning the Group 2 Henry II Stakes at Sandown on just his second start for Saeed bin Suroor; best remembered for his victory in the Group 1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June 2004 when, under a perfect waiting ride from Frankie Dettori, he unleashed an impressive turn of foot to beat the highly talented French raider Westerner; remained in training for the 2005 campaign, but was some way below his best and was retired after only two runs; with no stud career possible, he was rehomed for a career in dressage
