Loxley among four Godolphin runners at Deauville on Sunday

Four Godolphin runners are set to line-up at Deauville, France on Sunday, 26 August, including the Charlie Appleby-trained Loxley, who goes in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville over an extended mile and a half with William Buick in the saddle.

Last time out, the three-year-old New Approach colt was the comfortable winner of the 10-furlong Listed Prix Nureyev at Deauville on 11 August.

He was also runner-up in the G3 Bahrain Trophy over 13 furlongs at Newmarket on 12 July and began the campaign with a three-length victory in a 10-furlong novice race at Newmarket on 22 June.

Six other starters go to post in the Grand Prix de Deauville including last year’s winner Tiberian and G1 Coronation Cup second Salouen.

Charlie Appleby said: “Loxley won on his last start in a Listed race over 10 furlongs at Deauville and we are stepping up in distance on Sunday.

“He goes into the Sunday’s race in good order and this is a step up again for him to G2 company. He ran well at Newmarket over a mile and five furlongs, so is pretty versatile as regards to distance.”

The mile G3 Prix Quincey sees Salsabeel (Charlie Appleby/William Buick) and Graphite (Andre Fabre/Mickael Barzalona) go to post.

Salsabeel, a four-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, was third on his European return in a seven-furlong conditions race at Haydock Park, UK, on 21 July.

He began 2018 with victory in a mile turf handicap at Meydan, UAE on 18 January and was also a Listed runner-up as a two-year-old at Doncaster, UK, in September, 2016.

Graphite has made one appearance so far this year when runner-up to subsequent G3 scorer Plumatic in a mile conditions contest at Chantilly on 27 July.

The four-year-old son of Shamardal was successful in the nine-furlong G3 Prix La Force at Chantilly in April, 2017, and also scored over the same distance as a juvenile in a maiden at Maisons-Laffitte in October, 2016.

Charlie Appleby commented: “The run at Haydock has definitely brought on Salsabeel.

“We will have to see what the weather does, but a sounder surface should hopefully help him.

“If he brings the same form to the table he showed when winning at Meydan, he should be a live contender.”

Lisa Jane-Graffard of Godolphin said: “Graphite is well and the form of his comeback run has worked out very well.

“We hope that he can continue his progression after a long layoff.” Eight other runners line up in the Prix Quincey include G1 winner Robin Of Navan plus the Listed scorers Stunning Spirt and Enlighted.

D’bai (Charlie Appleby/William Buick) goes to post in the six-furlong G3 Prix de Meautry.

Last time out the four-year-old son of Dubawi was a staying-on sixth in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest over an extended six furlongs at Deauville on 5 August.

He has been on scoresheet twice so far this year, taking the seven-furlong G3 John Of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock Park on 9 June and a turf handicap over the same distance at Meydn, UAE, on 11 January.

There are 10 other declared starters in the Prix de Meautry, including G1 scorer Signs Of Blessing and Finsbury Square, a winner at G2 level.

Charlie Appleby remarked: “D’bai is a very consistent performer and is dropping back in class to G3 level in this race.

“He does have to carry a penalty but if he reproduces the same sort of form he has been showing on his last few starts, he should be a player.”
