Trip the key to Symbolization in Jersey

Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby believes that a reduction in distance will play to the strengths of smart three-year-old Symbolization in Wednesday’s G3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Cape Cross colt finished a solid fifth to Romanised in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas, over one mile, at the Curragh last month.

But he looked a little tired in the final furlong and found himself on the receiving end of a bump from a rival in the closing stages.

“I think he ran a respectable race in Ireland, but I am expecting the drop back in distance to seven furlongs to be in his favour.

“I expect Symbolization to be very competitive in the Jersey,” he added.

Appleby also saddles Glorious Journey, who carries the maroon and white colours of Her Highness Sheikha Al Jalila Racing.

On his most recent start, Glorious Journey finished a good third behind Intellogent and Patascoy in a G3 at Chantilly. The first two home went on to finish fourth and second respectively in the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club.

“Glorious Journey brings solid form to the table,” Appleby pointed out. “The French Derby form looks good and I think the drop back in distance will suit him too,” the trainer added.

Saeed bin Suroor sends out Arabian Coast, who is to be partnered by Christophe Soumillon. The three-year-old won his only start to date and shows great promise.

Saeed said: “Arabian Coast won well on his debut at Leicester and has come on for the run. He won over seven furlongs on quick ground and should be fine with similar conditions at Ascot.”

Godolphin last won the Jersey two years ago, with the Richard Fahey-trained Ribchester.
