G2 Champagne Stakes third for Mythical Magic

Racenews
Mythical Magic continued a bright start to his career with a close third in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, UK, on Saturday, September 16.

The two-year-old son of Iffraaj, a Listed winner at Deauville on August 13, was covered up towards the rear of the eight runners and raced keenly early on.

Mythical Magic was switched out by James Doyle approaching the two-furlong marker and quickened well to go third nearing the final half-furlong.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt galloped out strongly, losing out on second by a neck, with the same margin separating the winner Seahenge and Hey Gaman.

Seahenge prevailed in 1m 25.78s on ground described as good to soft, good in places, as the first three home finished four lengths clear of Red Mist in fourth.

Charlie Appleby said: “I was pleased with Mythical Magic, who has stepped up again from his win at Deauville.

“He slightly over-raced in the early part of the race but hit the line strongly and the first three home have pulled clear of the rest of the field.

“We will see how he comes out of this race and then potentially consider his options for the back end of the season.

“With the way he stayed on today, the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere (G1, Chantilly, October 1) over a mile could be an option. He is a big horse and time is only going to help him."
