Winx makes it 26 on end and 19 G1s

Mike Hedge

Going into the race named in her honour at Randwick on Saturday, Winx was, officially, the best racehorse in the world.

By the time she reached the line two lengths in front of the field in the G1 Winx Stakes, she had confirmed and enhanced her superiority.

The win was her 26th in succession, her 30th in all, her 19th at G1 and took her racetrack earnings beyond A$19 million.

For the third year in a row she won the race formerly known as the Warwick Stakes, and she did it with total domination of a field that included the winners of a Derby, an Oaks, a Rosehill Guineas and a Randwick Guineas.

In the first start of her latest preparation, the seven-year-old daughter of Darley’s much-lamented Street Cry, cruised to a two-length win over Invictus Prince with D’Argento in third place and Godolphin’s star colt Kementari fourth.

Kementari did his best to make a race of it with Winx, going with the mare when she made her run at the 400m and matching strides with her until her rider Hugh Bowman called for an effort.

Winx then extended, putting paid to her opposition in a couple of strides, sweeping to the lead and then easing down in the final 50m.

The win began a preparation that is intended to conclude with an unprecedented fourth victory in Australia’s best race, the G1 W S Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October.
