St Leger goal for Stakes-winning filly Rock Dove

Mike Hedge

A second victory at Listed level is on the line for Rock Dove when she runs in Thursday’s VRC St Leger at Flemington.

Already the winner of the Listed Strutt Stakes in Hobart in March, Rock Dove comes to the oldest Classic on the Australian calendar off a solid fifth in the Adrian Knox Stakes over 2,000m at Randwick earlier this month.

“She’s had a good, tough campaign and I think it’s worth popping the question,” said trainer James Cummings.

Rock Dove has won up to 2,100m and steps up to 2,800m in the St Leger, but Cummings is satisfied she will handle the jump in trip.

“She’s still up and about because she’s had her runs well spaced and her racing pattern suggests she should be suited by the extra trip,” he said.

Rock Dove (Jamie Kah) is one of six fillies in a race in which she is among the main chances, along with Stars Of Carrum and Transact.
