Siskany goes down fighting in G1 Preis von Europa

Racenews

Siskany put up another spirited display as he finished third on his first G1 appearance in the Preis von Europa at Cologne, Germany, on Sunday, 24 September.

This season’s G2 Belmont Cup winner was part of an early battle for the lead alongside Live Your Dream, Sirjan, Best Of Lips and Trevaunance before settling in a close fifth in the early stages of the 12-furlong contest.

Siskany went fourth from Live Your Dream after the first three furlongs and the Charlie Appleby-trained five-year-old moved up to dispute third on the outside of Sirjan at the top of the straight.

After staying on strongly, Siskany looked to hold every chance under William Buick as he challenged on the outside of Best Of Lips and Trevaunance over a furlong from home.

India swept past the leading trio shortly afterwards before going away to score by a length and a quarter, with Trevaunance prevailing by a neck over Siskany in a tussle for the runner-up spot.

Live Your Dream also acquitted himself well on his Group-race debut as he kept on in fifth, beaten just under two and a half lengths in total.

Charlie Appleby said: “Siskany ran his usual, solid race and he was probably slightly caught out by a lack of sharpness over the trip. He could potentially head back to North America for the Marathon on the Breeders’ Cup undercard. That race is on dirt but he has trained on the surface in Dubai and is by Dubawi, who has produced dirt runners. It is certainly an option for him.”
