Silver Knott notches another G2 placing with Twilight Derby second

Racenews

Silver Knott placed at G2 level for a third time in the United States this season as he went down by half a length to Seal Team in a frenetic finish to the Twilight Derby at Santa Anita on Saturday, 4 November.

The Charlie Appleby-trained three-year-old, third in both the Pennine Ridge Stakes and Secretariat Stakes over the summer, showed good early speed and made his way over from a wide draw to track Packs A Wahlop and Watsonville in third.

Shuffled back a couple of places down the back, Silver Knott started to make headway approaching the final quarter-mile and regained third at the top of the straight.

Silver Knott continued to stay on and briefly pressed for the lead inside the final furlong before Seal Team swooped to hit the front in the final strides. The Godolphin runner came out on top in a bunch finish for the minor honours, with little more than a length separating second and seventh.

Charlie Appleby said: “Silver Knott has run another solid race. The likelihood is that we will ship him out to Dubai now and look at some of the nice races over the winter for him. He has proven a solid campaigner all season without getting his head in front.”
