Sefton bids by Folkswood & Viren’s Army

Folkswood and Viren’s Army, who ran well in Dubai earlier this year, return to British action in the G3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes (15.00hrs local time) over nine furlongs at Newmarket on Wednesday, April 19.

The two four-year-olds, trained by Charlie Appleby, both won in Dubai and they take on six rivals, including Cambridgeshire Handicap winner Spark Plug and Lincoln Handicap victor Bravery.

Folkswood won a nine-furlong handicap in good style at Meydan on February 9 and then made the running until caught close home when beaten a neck by Decorated Knight in the G1 Jebel Hatta Stakes over the same course and distance on March 4.

William Buick, who was on board that day, takes the ride again on the son of Exceed And Excel, while James Doyle partners Viren’s Army who captured a 10-furlong Meydan handicap on February 23; his most recent start.

Charlie Appleby commented: “Folkswood put up a career-best performance in the Jebel Hatta and seems in good order back in the UK.

“He is fit and well and I am confident he can bring his Dubai form to Newmarket where he has been successful previously.

“Folkswood went to the front last time because of his draw but he doesn’t need to lead. He will be ridden prominently and the quick ground will suit him on Wednesday.

“Viren’s Army is stepping back in trip but he showed plenty of pace at Meydan so I don’t think nine furlongs will be a problem.

“As well as being successful in Dubai, he won the Dee Stakes at Chester last year and there is not much between these two horses.

“He too will be ridden prominently and I hope he can show his well-being again.”
