Savatiano and Tally fly the flag for Street Cry at Caulfield

Mike Hedge

Consistency, ability and fitness all come together to support the prospects of Savatiano as she bids for a career highlight in the G2 Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, 20 October.

Savatiano (Kerrin McEvoy) has put together an admirable record with five wins and six seconds from her 14 starts, and with ordinary luck at her latest outing it might be even better.

The filly was in a winning position until a vital stage at Flemington two weeks ago only to be held up in traffic and denied a chance to finish off.

“She was desperately unlucky last time at Flemington,” said her trainer James Cummings.

“Since then she’s tightened up even more and she has the opportunity to show enough to progress on to the 1600m of the G1 Myer Stakes at Flemington next month.”

On a day when the abiding influence her sire Street Cry will be prominent at Caulfield, Savatiano is joined on the card by one of his favourite sons, Tally (Damian Lane) in the G3 Coongy Cup.

And in Sydney on Saturday, Street Cry’s daughter Epidemic, is a major contender in the G3 Nivison.

Tally comes to his latest contest after a one-sided encounter with Street Cry’s world champion daughter Winx at his previous start and Cummings is looking forward to seeing some improvement.

“He’s third up now and back to a Group Three, so we should see him running on well against these horses despite him carrying topweight,” he said.

“He’s lightened off a bit, but if he can start to strengthen up he can be competitive in these G2 and G3 races that are coming up.”

Also in the Coongy, the import Best Of Days (James McDonald) faces a test that may well determine his future path.

In three starts in Australia Best Of Days has recorded a win and two placing and while he’d been placed at up to 2400m in England, he hasn’t won beyond 1600m.

“He’s racing very well, but I’d like him to prove to me that he’s a capable 2000m horse,” Cummings said.

“But he’s in his right race, nicely weighted.”

The Caufield team is completed by Jorda (Damian Lane) and Soothing (James McDonald) in the Listed Alinghi Stakes.

“Jorda has really blossomed this week and she’s enjoyed the gap between runs,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to her finding her spring form from last year.

“And Soothing has maintained excellent condition and is prepared to run well in anything she lines up in.”
