Prize Money gives Godolphin a fourth victory

An outside draw and top-weight proved to be no barrier for Prize Money, who flew home for Adrie de Vries to take The Meydan Hotel Handicap on turf, providing trainer Saeed bin Suroor with a double and Godolphin a fourth success on the night.

The four-year-old was drawn widest of the field in stall 14 and raced in towards the rear for much of 12-furlong contest.

Prize Money still had the majority of his rivals in front of him turning for home but ran on strongly down the centre of the track in the straight, hitting the front 100 yards from the post for a neck success over Rembrandt Van Rijn in 2m 31.32s.

Saeed bin Suroor said: “Prize Money has run a huge race under top-weight.

“We might keep him at a mile and a half for the G2 Dubai City Of Gold on Super Saturday (March 4), or he could step up to a mile and six furlongs for the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy on February 23.”

Adrie de Vries commented: “Prize Money is a good horse who travels like a dream. We didn’t jump too well but he got into a nice rhythm with a nice bit of cover.

“It was only a question of finding a gap in the straight and he got it all over with very quickly.

“The wide draw didn’t bother me too much over this trip. I knew that we were going to go a good pace and there were a lot of horses going forward. They went a nice, even pace and it helped a lot.

“He stayed on and I think that he will get further. He is a class horse because he has only turned four and was carrying 60kg, so he must be good to be able to do that. There is a lot of potential in him.

“I am very happy to get the chance to ride for Godolphin and I am very fortunate.”
