Lake Avenue powers home in G2 Demoiselle Stakes

Racenews

Lake Avenue laid down an early marker for next year’s Kentucky Oaks with a dominant victory in the nine-furlong G2 Demoiselle Stakes on dirt at Aqueduct, USA, on Saturday, 7 December.

The two-year-old Tapit filly, a 13-length maiden winner for trainer Bill Mott at the same course on Thursday, 14 November, broke on terms from her wide draw and was sent to the front of the 10 runners by Junior Alvarado after a furlong and a half.

Lake Avenue travelled strongly throughout and quickened further clear inside the final furlong to score by four lengths over Maedean in 1m 54.55s on a fast track.

Godolphin USA President Jimmy Bell said: “Lake Avenue produced a very good performance. We wanted to find out whether she stayed this distance and she proved today that she is a proper two-turn filly.

“She led for most of the race and opened up again in the home straight, when she was gawking and moving her head around. It is a long time for a two-year-old to be in front and maintain their concentration. She is obviously a very talented filly and it was a super win.”
