Kentucky Oaks no pipe dream for Wet Paint following G3 Fantasy Stakes win

Racenews

Wet Paint enjoyed the perfect warm-up for the Kentucky Oaks as she completed a clean sweep of the Oaklawn Park trials with another last-to-first victory in the G3 Fantasy Stakes on Saturday, 1 April.

The Brad Cox-trained filly had stormed home from the rear in both the Martha Washington Stakes and G3 Honeybee Stakes and once again adopted her usual position in a detached last throughout the first half of the extended-mile feature.

Flavien Prat started to take closer order around the field leaving the back and cajoled the Godolphin homebred on to the heels of the leaders turning into the home straight.

Wet Paint took up the running entering the final furlong and quickened away in the closing stages to readily score by two and a half lengths over Taxed.

Brad Cox said: “Wet Paint had been training really well and handled the fast track today, which was a question mark for her. It was a very big performance and we are very happy.

“This Oaklawn path can lead to a win in the Kentucky Oaks and we are very proud with what Wet Paint has achieved here all winter. She is an exciting filly and we are looking forward to the Kentucky Oaks.”
