Juddmonte International third for Barney Roy

Racenews

Barney Roy ran well to finish third in the G1 Juddmonte International over an extended 10 furlongs at York, UK, on Wednesday, August 23.

The Richard Hannon-trained three-year-old colt, partnered by James Doyle and making his fourth consecutive appearance at the highest level, broke well and settled in third place before moving up to track the leader Cliffs Of Moher after the first furlong.

He continued to hold a prominent position and was asked to extend entering the final two furlongs, when he faced a strong challenge from Churchill.

Barney Roy was headed by Churchill entering the final furlong before Ulysses overtook the pair and went on to score by two lengths. Churchill took second, a neck ahead of Barney Roy. There was another four and a half lengths back to Cliffs Of Moher in fourth. The winning time was 2m 12.11s on ground described as good to soft, soft in places.

Richard Hannon said: "That was another very solid run from Barney Roy. They took each other on a long way out and probably set it up for the winner.

"We might run him over 10 furlongs again, but a lot will depend on the ground. If it comes up soft we could go back to a mile with him.”
