Goodwood G3 Second For Mise En Rose

Mise En Rose stayed on well to take second in the seven-furlong G3 L´Ormarins Queens Plate Stakes on the fourth day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Friday, July 29.

Mise En Rose stayed on well to take second in the seven-furlong G3 L´Ormarins Queens Plate Stakes on the fourth day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, Friday, July 29.

The War Front three-year-old, trained by Charlie Appleby, stepped up in class following an impressive victory in handicap company at Newmarket, Mise En Rose was held up by James McDonald in third last of the 11 runners on the far rail off a strong early pace.

She progressed into sixth approaching the quarter-mile marker and continued to make headway, going second inside the final furlong but could not get to grips with Al Jazi who kept on well to win by a length and three-quarters in 1m 24.92s on ground described as good to firm.

Charlie Appleby said: "I'm delighted with Mise En Rose. If you had told me this morning she was going to finish second then I would have taken that quite happily.

"They have gone quite hard early on and she has struggled to lay up a bit. James said she was just behind the bridle a little bit but she has stayed on nicely. She has got a turn of foot and she utilised it. I'm very pleased.

"Seven furlongs is definitely her trip. With quick ground and seven furlongs, we might just nick one somewhere."

The other Godolphin runner, Always Smile (Saeed bin Suroor/James Doyle), kept on to finish fourth.

Earlier on the card, Final Reckoning (Charlie Appleby/James McDonald) built on his maiden success at Yarmouth with victory in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Nursery over six furlongs.

The two-year-old Dark Angel colt took the lead over a furlong out and repelled the challenge of Rusumaat in the closing stages to win by a neck in a time of 1m 11.50s.

Top Score, representing Saeed bin Suroor and James Doyle, was three quarters of a length further back in third.

Charlie Appleby commented: "It is nice to get a winner on the board.

"I've been pleased with the way the two-year-olds have been running this week. I've just hit the bar a few times.

"I gave Final Reckoning a little break after his win at Yarmouth and he's come back in good order. Obviously, coming back to a sounder surface has helped him as well.

James thought we might be able to bring him back to five furlongs as well if we wanted to. He's toughed it out well.

"He's got a Gimcrack entry (G2, 6f, York, August 20) but I don't think we'll be flying as high as that just yet. He's a handy little horse to have in the yard - he's got some natural pace and we'll have a bit of fun with him.

"James has given him a lovely ride - he always fills you with confidence the way he rides the horses. He's let him stride on and find his feet and just get into it. Since Yarmouth, Final Reckoning has done a lot of growing up. Mentally, he's just done well and gets on with it at home - he's a sensible little horse."
