Godolphin pair on Australian Guineas trail

The consistent colts Morton's Fork and Trenchant will be out to establish G1 claims when they run in Saturday’s G3 Manfred Stakes at Caulfield.

Both three-year-old’s have shown an ability to handle Melbourne’s left-handed tracks and both have the G1 Australian Guineas as their Autumn targets.

Morton’s Fork (John O’Shea/Craig Williams) demonstrated his class with a series of solid efforts in Melbourne last Spring, culminating with his victory in the G3 Sandown Guineas, a result that took his record to four wins and four placings from his only nine starts.

“The only time he’s missed a place he was very unlucky and he confirmed that by going on to win the Sandown Guineas,” O’Shea said.

“The Australian Guineas is his target, I expect him to run well on Saturday, but he’ll be better for the run.”

Trenchant (John O’Shea/Ben Melham) followed a similar Spring path to his stablemate, finishing with a luckless run in the Listed Gothic Stakes at Caulfield.

“He’s done all his racing in Melbourne and has won a stakes race down there, so he’ll probably stay there this prep,” O’Shea said.

“All going well, he’ll also go to the Australian Guineas.”

The Godolphin pair is opposed to an even group of rivals, headed by the stakes winner Hey Doc, winner of last spring’s G2 Stutt Stakes, the highly-promising Manolo Blahniq and the unbeaten Into Orbit.

The Australian Guineas is run at Flemington on March 4.
