G3 Mazarine Stakes second for Carnival Colors

Racenews

Carnival Colors just failed to win the G3 Mazarine Stakes over an extended mile on Tapeta at Woodbine, Canada, on Saturday, 6 October going down by a head for second place.

The two-year-old Distorted Humor filly, an easy winner of an Arlington maiden over the same trip 16 August, was well away and raced in fourth of the seven runners towards the outside.

Carnival Colors, trained by Michael Stidham and partnered by Luis Contreras, moved up to third on the far side and progressed turning in to try and challenge.

She looked held in fourth, but the winner’s run Tiz Breathtaking on the wide outside prompted her to move forward strongly and go close by the line. The winner’s time was 1m 45.28s.

Michael Stidham said: “I was delighted with Carnival Colors’ effort.

“She looked beaten at the 16th pole, but the run of the winner on the outside sparked her interest and she came back on the bridle.

“She ran on well and has handled the step-up in class from winning a maiden to G3 well. There are a lot of options now and we will examine them.”
