G3 glory for Vintager at Chantilly

Racenews

Vintager capitalised on his return racing over a mile when gaining a first Pattern race success in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at Chantilly, France, on Sunday, 16 June.

The Charlie Appleby-trained four-year-old, an easy winner of a Newmarket handicap over the same trip in July last year, disputed the early running under James Doyle before settling a close second of the five-strong field after a furlong.

Vintager moved up to hit the front a furlong and a half from home. He went clear and then ran on well when challenged by Trais Fluors to beat that opponent by three quarters of a length in 1m 36.74s on good to soft ground, with three and a half lengths back to Lunch Lady in third.

Charlie Appleby said: “The drop back to a mile and the ease in the ground suited Vintager today and I am delighted that he has won a Group race.

“We will have a look at keeping him at this distance now, with the G2 Summer Mile at Ascot (Saturday, 13 July) a potential target.”
