G2 Prix Eugene Adam third for Avilius

Avilius ran well to finish third in the G2 Prix Eugene Adam over a mile and a quarter at Maisons-Laffitte, France, on Sunday, July 16.

The three-year-old son of Pivotal, trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Mickael Barzalona, was having his fourth start and broke well before dropping back to second last of the eight runners.

The Godolphin colt raced in last turning for home and remained on the inside once in the straight.

Avilius made progress to go sixth and was asked, with two furlongs left, to try and challenge.

Switched out and then back in, he ran on well to snatch third close home, finishing half a length and a length and a quarter respectively behind the winner Finche and the second Afandem. The winning time on good ground was 2m 5.00s.

Lisa-Jane Graffard of Godolphin said: “Avilius ran very well.

“He was a bit outpaced early on but stayed on strongly at the end.

“He is a fairly laid-back sort and maybe needed the race a bit, not having run since April.

“There are plenty of nice options for him coming up at this sort of level.”
