G1 second and third for Racing History and Hawkbill in Germany

Racing History and Hawkbill came home second and third respectively, separated by a nose, in the G1 Pastorius Grosser Preis von Bayern over a mile and a half at Munich, Germany, on Tuesday, November 1.

Four-year-old Racing History (Saeed bin Suroor/Ioritz Mendizabal) disputed third early on before settling fourth of the nine runners after the first half-mile as Guignol opened up a clear lead over the rest of the field.

He made good headway inside the home straight and grabbed second on the line from Hawkbill, but could not get to Guignol, who made all to score by a length and three quarters in 2m 37.42s on soft ground.

Hawkbill (Charlie Appleby/William Buick), the winner over 10 furlongs of the G1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park, UK, in July, was covered up in fifth early on and progressed to third down the back straight.

The three-year-old took closer order turning for home and stayed on to take over in  second from Savoir Vivre with a furlong and a half to race but was edged out on the line by Racing History despite keeping on well.

Hugh Anderson, Managing Director of Godolphin and Darley (UK), said: "Racing History and Hawkbill have both run very creditably.

"The ground was pretty testing and sticky, which made it difficult, and Guignol gave them a lot to do in the straight.

"William Buick and Ioritz Mendizabal were happy with the performances and both horses should be good to continue racing next year."
