Folkswood bidding to repeat Cranbourne Cup win

Mike Hedge

The race that 12 months ago set Folkswood on a path to one of Australia’s greatest races is again to be used as a test of his future prospects.

Folkswood won the Listed Cranbourne Cup at his first Australian start in 2017 and then finished third behind Winx and Humidor in the G1 WS Cox Plate.

He runs again in the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday, with the race again to be used as a guide to his immediate future.

Folkswood disappointed at his latest outing when down the track in the G3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield last month.

His trainer Charlie Appleby said the horse has given no concern since and should be ready to again run well.

“He was disappointing at Caulfield on his first run in Australia this year,” Appleby said.

“He drew wide, and appeared to travel well to the home turn, but caved in very quickly.

“He won the Cranbourne Cup last year, so we know he is up to it, but we will see how he runs this time before making further plans.”
