Flying Honours narrowly eclipsed in G2 Royal Lodge Stakes

Racenews

Flying Honours finished a close third in a scrappy renewal of the mile G2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket, UK, on Saturday, 24 September.

Dubai Mile set sedate early fractions in the two-year-old contest as Salisbury Listed winner Flying Honours tracked the leader before being joined in second by Greenland after the first three furlongs.

Flying Honours closed on Dubai Mile when the pace lifted approaching the final two furlongs, with The Foxes and Greenland also challenging as all four horses looked to hold every chance with a furlong to race.

The Foxes established a narrow advantage soon after but was forced to fight hard in front as Flying Honours pressed for the lead under William Buick.

The Godolphin colt could find no extra close home and was collared for second on the line by the rallying Dubai Mile, going down by just over half a length in total.

Charlie Appleby said: “It was a strangely run race and I am tempted to put a line through it. We will see how Flying Honours comes out of the race but we could give him one more run this season, potentially back at Newmarket in the G3 Autumn Stakes.”
