Excellent second for Mise En Rose in Sceptre

Mise En Rose was edged out when the neck runner-up in the seven-furlong G3 Japan Racing Association Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster, UK, on Friday, September 9.

The three-year-old filly, representing Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, was covered up at the rear of the seven runners.

Mise En Rose still had the rest of the field in front of her approaching the final quarter-mile but came through strongly between runners to hit the front just outside the final furlong.

She was joined with a half-furlong to go by Spangled, who soon gained a narrow advantage but the Godolphin filly fought back well. The winner prevailed by a neck in 1m 25.81s on ground described as good, good to firm in places.

HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum’s Lumiere briefly led over a furlong out before keeping on to finish third, two and a quarter lengths behind Mise En Rose.

Charlie Appleby said: "It was rough ground at Deauville when she ran last time and a rough race as well - it just didn’t materialise for her that day.

"I knew coming into today that she was in good order and the sound surface really suited her. She deserves to win a race like this.

"I thought today that she had nearly nicked it, but she fought out the finish well and she has just been beaten by a bigger and stronger filly.

"She has a couple of options going forward, her next run will probably be in the Fleur de Lys (Listed, 1m, Polytrack, October 27) at Lingfield on the All-Weather.

"She deserves to win a black-type race. She has been placed twice now, here today and at Goodwood."
